Our Congregation

We’re often asked the question, “What kind of church is Lane Christian Church?” and our response is, “We’re a Christian Church!” The answer sounds simple, but in a world of countless denominations and religious bodies, what exactly does
“Christian Church” mean? The following is a summary of who we are at Lane Christian Church.

A Christian Church

Our message is that “Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living
God.” We require no other creed. He alone is Lord and Savior.

A Church of Christ

The church belongs to Jesus. We have no authority to
change the teachings, rewrite the rules, alter membership requirements, or usurp
His place of authority. The church is not a democracy.

A Church Seeking Unity

We seek to be one in Christ with all others whom He
calls His own. We are not the only Christians, but we do seek to be Christians
only. Where God has a son or daughter, we have a brother or sister!

A Church Seeking Restoration

As much as possible, we imitate the New
Testament precedents concerning the church. That is why our baptism is by
immersion, for the forgiveness of sins; our Communion is every Lord’s Day; our
leaders are called Elders; our servants are called Deacons; our preaching is
about Christ; and our prayers are in Christ’s Name. Even our name is rooted in
the early church; for the disciples were simply called “Christians” (Acts 11:26).

An Apostolic Church

The church is “built on the foundation of the apostles and
prophets, with Christ Jesus Himself as the chief cornerstone” (
Ephesians 2:20).
Our understanding of Christ and His church comes from the writings of Jesus’
closest companions: the Apostles.

A Thinking Church

When Paul writes to the church at Ephesus, he prays that
God will give them a “Spirit of wisdom and revelation,” so that they may know
Jesus better (
Ephesians 1:17). Faith demands the best our minds can give, so we
strive to be people of the Word, seeking to apply Biblical Truth intelligently.

A Feeling Church

While we strive to be people of the Word, ours is not a dryly
intellectual approach to God. We rejoice and praise, pray and love, and serve
from the heart. We are unashamed of the Gospel and not embarrassed to let
our excitement be seen.

A Sharing Church

We share our faith, love, and possessions with as many
people as we can reach, knowing that everything that we have ultimately
belongs to God, which is to be used for His purposes, and His Glory.

A Free Church

We have neither bishops nor superintendents, nor any national
headquarters that determine church policies. We elect our own leaders, call
and support our own ministers, and determine who receives our mission and
benevolence funds. While we are an independent church, we’re not
isolationists. We freely associate with other churches, both within and beyond
our brotherhood, to accomplish tasks too big for one church accomplish alone.

A Growing Church

The Gospel transforms lives, and with those transformations,
the church grows (
Acts 2:47). We operate under Christ’s commission to make
disciples. We’re constantly renewing our commitment to go to the ends of the
earth, preaching and baptizing and teaching, until the whole world knows the
One Lord of All.
